All About Arthritis

Living with arthritis can become increasingly difficult. The persistent stiffness and pain in your joints often put limits on your life and interferes with your ability to get the exercise you need to support joint health.

To help you battle the vicious cycle arthritis creates, experienced chiropractor James Appell, DC, and our team at Medical Wellness Group offer comprehensive arthritis treatment services. We focus on reducing your pain and slowing the progression of your disease to preserve your long-term joint health.

To help you understand how to manage your arthritis, it’s important to know exactly what it can do to your joints.

Why you have arthritis

There are over 100 different types of arthritis, many of which affect both kids and adults. All types of arthritis describe inflammation in your joints, the place where two bones meet. This ongoing inflammation results in joint stiffness, pain, and the loss of mobility and range of motion.

While arthritis can affect any joint in the body, the most common joints affected include the:

  • Knee
  • Elbow
  • Spine
  • Ankle
  • Shoulder

The small joints of the fingers and toes are also susceptible to arthritis.

You may be at increased risk for developing arthritis as you age or if you have a family history of the disease. Your arthritis risk might also go up if you have already injured a joint. If you’re overweight or obese, the excess pressure on your joints can ultimately lead to arthritis.

Your gender may also play a role in arthritis. Some types of arthritis are more common in women, while men are more likely to develop other types.

Different types of arthritis

While there are many types of arthritis that can develop in your lifetime, there are four that are most common:

  • Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is often an age-related condition that affects the cartilage that protects the ends of your joint bones. Without this cartilage, the bones create friction by repeatedly rubbing together. This causes chronic stiffness, inflammation and pain.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis that affects multiple joints. The condition develops because of immune system dysfunction that causes your body to mistakenly attack the otherwise healthy lining of your joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women.
  • Infectious arthritis
Infectious arthritis develops from a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection that spreads from one joint to another. The infection causes intense joint pain, joint swelling, and often chills and a fever.
  • Gout
Gout is a painful arthritis that starts when excess uric acid builds up in your body. Typically, your blood dissolves uric acid that you get from your diet, so it can pass out of your body in your urine. A buildup of acid can form sharp crystals that press into your joints, typically in your big toe, and cause episodes of intense joint pain and stiffness.

Managing your arthritis

Because arthritis pain and stiffness can worsen over time and lead to a disability, it’s important you begin treatment early. With proper management of your arthritis, you can proactively protect your joint health and control pain and other arthritis symptoms better.

Dr. Appell and our Medical Wellness Group staff offer several solutions for managing all types of arthritis pain. We customize your treatment to your individual needs to slow the progression of your disease and help you live a physically active life.

Treatment options include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
Chiropractic adjustments ensure your joints are properly aligned. These adjustments also improve your overall blood circulation and release tension in your muscles to keep joints healthy and functional.
  • Ultrasound therapy
Ultrasound therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses sound waves to boost your blood circulation and trigger your body’s own natural healing abilities.
  • Regenerative medicine
Regenerative medicine using stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can help your body heal itself from the inside out. Stem cells and PRP stimulate your body to produce new, healthy cells. These new cells replace damaged cells in your bones and soft tissues to restore joint health.

The team also works with you on lifestyle modifications like improving your diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping your joints flexible and strong.
